On the occasion of World Recycling Day celebrated on 18 March, Discurv asked the French about their habits and their level of knowledge of the new anti-waste law concerning the sorting of household waste.

The French and recycling: what perception, what habits?

According to our study carried out on a sample of 1000 respondents representative of the French population (age, sex, CSP, regions), Selective sorting is an easy thing to do on a daily basis for 8 out of 10 French people.

Nevertheless, 89% would like to know more about how waste is recycled in a concrete way, and 85% want the creation of new collection points. ♻️

What are the motivations of French people to recycle?

After analyzing the results, we notice that the French sort by conviction rather than by compulsion!

In fact, 53% of them sort their waste for reduce their environmental impact And for 84% of French people, Waste sorting is a important gesture that allows preserve biodiversity and the climate.

What level of knowledge concerning the new anti-waste law on the territory?

In fact, we note that The anti-waste law for a circular economy, which came into force in 2023, is relatively well known by the French.

In fact, 86% They know that disposable tableware is now banned in restaurants which can accommodate more than 20 customers in the room and 83% know that printing cash receipts will no longer be mandatory starting on April 1, 2023.

However, in practice, the French seem to encounter difficulties in sorting household waste in their homes. Half of them say they are not aware of the new simplified selective sorting instructions.

(ℹ️ Since January 1, 2023, selective sorting instructions have been simplified in France: we can now put all plastic and metal packaging in the yellow trash can (even coffee capsules, yogurt cups or toothpaste tubes)

Young people, the most concerned by environmental issues, but sort less...

If young people (under 35) are more sensitive to environmental and climate issues, they are however Those who sort their waste the least.

In general, 37% of people under 35 do not consider themselves well enough informed about the practices to be adopted in terms of waste sorting.

Besides, 63% of young people say they were not aware of the new sorting rules in force since January 1, 2023 (vs 51% on average), and 73% say they do not know that printing cash receipts in stores will no longer be mandatory (vs. 83% on average).
